Rachael and Levi requested a traditional Red and White church wedding. We talked them into adding some texture and the addition of a rhinestone broach to the bridal bouquet to spice things up a bit.

Red Ecuadorian roses, Red spray roses, white mini callas and a rhinestone broach made up this beautiful bride's bouquet.

The Bridesmaids wore scarlet red halter dresses which was striking against the backdrop of St Paul’s United Methodist Church in Coronado. St. Paul’s is the oldest congregation in Coronado. It was founded in 1887, however the current church, built in the 1960′s, reflects a nautical theme in both structure and detail.

White Ecuadorian roses, white Asiatic lilies, green coffee bean and white mini callas and one variegated ti leaf comprised this all white bridesmaid bouquet.

One large spray was placed on the alter and two book-end sprays were placed behind the alter on podiums as further backdrop to this traditional wedding. Variegated ti leaves were added to give some dimension to the arrangements.

Alter arrangement consisting of white and red Ecuadorian roses, white stargazer lilies, bells of Ireland and variegated ti leaves.

In keeping with the traditional theme of the wedding, floral sprays were added to tulle pew bows and draping. Make sure you check with your church wedding coordinator before ordering flowers for the pews, there may be certain requirements or restrictions. In this case the coordinator provided the pew bow clips which were unlike traditional clips due to the wide width of the pews. This is very important to know before ordering your flowers.

White stargazer lilies, red Ecuadorian roses and bear grass pew floral sprays.

Turn tradition up a notch by incorporating interesting accent flowers. The more texture and color you add to your flowers the more pronounced they appear in your photos. Consider incorporating a new or old broach into your bouquet so that your bridal bouquet is one of a kind!

During hotter months bouquets should be delivered in vases with a small amount of water just below the ribbon line to keep them from wilting.

When I first met with Jason at a cafe near his job at a local sport team paraphernalia store, he immediately told me he and his fiance were looking for a florist who could visualize his unique concept. The challenge he presented to us was to create a bouquet and matching boutonniere for each of the 5 attendants and bridesmaids to correspond to each of the 5 Philadelphia professional sport teams: Eagles, Philadelphia Union, Flyers, 76ers, Phillies. The only stipulation his fiance Becky gave him was to make sure the flowers had a country or wildflower feel.

This request was quite a creative challenge because it was almost as if we were creating 5 unique weddings and tying them into one wedding party. We were also very careful to keep the wedding from looking kitschy and more like a country chic wedding.

We started by reviewing the logos for each of the sport teams and built our designs around 2 – 3 basic colors for each.

San Diego weddings open up so many opportunities for themed or any other style of wedding flowers. Becky and Jason’s wedding is no exception. We blended Philadelphia sport teams and country chic using the Pacific Ocean as a breath taking backdrop. Very few cities offer what San Diego does for wedding flower variety and availability. Keep us in mind if you know of anyone looking for a San Diego or destination wedding florist.

Welcome to my first Floral Atmospheres’ Blog. My goal is to use this tool to provide brides, planners and guests with helpful hints and inspiration for a perfect event. This November blog finds us at the end of the year which is usually filled with various events spent with family and friends.

Are you decorating for the holidays? If so, you may want to consider something a little different than a traditional centerpiece. I recently used Manzanita trees for the “Creeps for Critters” fundraiser to benefit Second Chance Dog Rescue, San Diego. Aside from the natural beauty of a Manzanita tree, these centerpieces offer durability which in turn allows you the option to use them again and again no matter what the occasion.

Manzanita trees make great Thanksgiving centerpieces

Consider using one of these trees as your Thanksgiving centerpiece. You can achieve your fall look by using dried fall leaves or fresh seasonal flowers. As you can see from the photo, I wired flower balls on the lower branches for a big splash of color and then used smaller individual flowers on some of the top branches to tie in additional colors. I also hung votives from the stronger branches which created an elegant dinner setting (be careful not to get the votive flame too close to the stems or consider using flameless votives.) Hanging crystals can be added for additional dimension.

Another great idea is to create a family tree using 3” x 5” family photos hanging from various branches.

Make a Manzanita Family Tree!

Manzanita branches are available in their natural deep red color or sandblasted which results in a bone color. You can also spray paint the branches any color you choose.

A sanblasted Manzanita Christmas Display

Consider the sandblasted branches for your holiday card tree or for you next baby or bridal shower.

Brides to be, consider using a Manzanita tree as guest card holder or wishing tree at your reception.

White Manzanita wishing tree

You can order your tree in any color and container combination. I can provide you with the finished tree to decorate yourself or I also offer decorating services to compliment any occasion. Most trees stand 31/2 to 4ft tall when finished. Because of the height and open nature of the branch structure you will have very little obstruction if using for a centerpiece.

Check back next month when I discuss interesting holiday and wedding wreath centerpieces.
